Russell has been painting landscapes in oils for over thirty years and his passion for big skies is clear in much of his work. Over the years he has developed his own style of realism taking inspiration from the masters of landscape painting. He blends oils and layers the paint using a variety of techniques to produce what has been described as ‘realistic and atmospheric but with a painted rather than photographic feel’
Originally trained in fine art in his home town of Barnsley, South yorkshire, England, Russell gained a Creative and Performing Arts degree from Newcastle upon Tyne as well as a Master of Arts degree in Television Production from Bournemouth University. He is a trained actor and director of both stage and screen and his television and video productions reflect his visual awareness. The recently released documentary ‘The Lincoln Cathedral Story’ clearly shows his understanding and use of light, framing and composition. He has painted to Commission in Canada, Europe and Australia and has produced and directed award winning documentaries and television commercials in the UK and Canada.
Russell spends his time working on commissions and self interest studies as well as writing and researching video productions. He has taught video production to undergraduates and has run workshops in Drama and Art in schools and community venues.
